What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean for you?
Hispanic Heritage Month means to me being appreciative of the sacrifices my mom made to uproot her life and move to the United States to give herself a better life opportunity and be able to help the rest of the family. She was also able to share that with one of my cousins who also came to have a better life and be able to support our family back in Colombia.

How do you celebrate in your culture?
So, Colombia Independence Day is July 20th. And on that day, we celebrate by cooking a traditional dish and listen to our folkloric music Ballenato. We love to make Arepas (tortilla) from white corn, it can be plain or with cheese. Coffee- is a must, it’s like an expresso, but ours is way stronger that we drink it like a shot in a small, tiny cup.
What are some of your family favorite activities?
We love to dance to Cumbia & Ballenato music, we also like to make up rhythm jokes by singing and love soccer games.
What are some of your family’s favorite foods?
Our traditional plate is called: Bandeja Paisa and it consist of the following: white rice, steak, chorizo, fried pork belly, fried plantain, fried egg, fresh cheese and arepa.
Bake: Pan de bono and Bunuelos- they are so delicious one of them is a roll with cheese inside and the other one is a deep-fried roll also made with cheese, but you put cane syrup.
